WASNJ | Using Physics as a Centre, She Measures the World
Our conversation with Yulai held more than a few surprises.
Despite receiving offers from four of Hong Kong’s top universities, including the University of Hong Kong, and even securing a full scholarship from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, despite her talents beyond science — including music, literature, the arts, and fluency in five languages — she still doesn’t quite fit the conventional image of an “all-round top student”.
She is not a so-called “excellent sheep”, nor does she suffer from the “existential emptiness” that plagues many high-achieving youth today. On the contrary, she is both determined and open-minded. She has anchored herself in physics, and from that focal point, she continues to expand her intellectual radius through astronomy’s vastness, philosophy’s depth, mathematics’ precision, chemistry’s wonders, music’s elegance, literature’s romance, and the grandeur of art — redrawing her own universe of knowledge within an ever-growing boundary.
