Appointment of New Executive Headmaster at Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing
Friday 17th January 2025
Dear all,
We are thrilled to introduce Mr Matthew Jamieson as the new Executive Headmaster of Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing.
Matthew will join us in April 2025, leaving ample time to prepare for the retirement of our outgoing Executive Headmaster, Mr Christopher Chadwick, at the end of the academic year.
Matthew comes to us from the position of Interim Headmaster of Sherborne School, one of the top UK boarding schools, renowned for its academic excellence, pastoral care, and commitment to holistic education. His leadership has continued their tradition of producing well-rounded students who excel in academics, arts, sports, and leadership.
His previous educational roles include Assistant Head at Brighton College, where he managed boarding strategy and supported significant growth, and Housemaster at Bedford School, where he was responsible for both pastoral and academic well-being.
Matthew also takes a keen interest in many extra-curricular activities. He is closely interested in current affairs and business theory, and enjoys opera and classical music. He is a long-distance runner, a former junior international hockey player, and enjoys team activities, once leading a team of 50 on an expedition to Everest Base Camp.
Married to his wife, Emma, and having two children, Matthew was educated on a scholarship to Millfield School. He read history at the University of Birmingham before serving as an officer in the British Army. During that experience, he exemplified the practice and study of leadership, flexibility, and creativity, values which have served him well throughout his career in education. Furthermore,
Matthew’s deep commitment to continuous professional development is evident in his pursuit of an Executive MBA at the University of East London.
His enthusiasm for joining Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing is palpable: “I am incredibly excited to join Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing as Headmaster. The school’s commitment to academic excellence and holistic education resonates deeply with my values. I look forward to working with the talented team at WAS and BE to continue building a nurturing and inspiring environment for our students. Similarly, I am excited to move to China, particularly Nanjing, to see the dynamic mixture of history and modern development I have heard so much about.”
As we prepare for this transition, we want to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to our outgoing Executive Headmaster, Mr Christopher Chadwick. His wisdom, integrity, and unwavering commitment to our school have left an indelible mark. Prior to his retirement in July 2025, Chris will remain in a supporting role to help ensure a seamless transition to Matthew and an exciting new era for our community.
Chris remarked: “It has been a privilege to lead Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing. I am confident that Matthew will continue to drive the school forward, ensuring its place as a beacon of excellence in education.”
Please join us in celebrating this significant milestone for our school and supporting Matthew Jamieson as he takes on his new role. We look forward to your continued collaboration and shared commitment to the success of Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing.
